It was a pretty good show. I liked Malmö’s smaller venue and the smaller stage. A lot of performers got lost on Baku’s huge stage last year. Singers with a more intimate style, such as Anouk from the Netherlands and Birgit from Estonia really benefited.
The postcards before each performance were very nice, showing each artist going about a “normal day” in their native land. The butterfly graphic symbolizing each flag was also a nice touch.
Loreen’s opening number with the deaf children signing “Euphoria” was a moving and lovely moment.
Sadly, Austria’s Natália Kelly was not the best choice to start off the show. She wasn’t bad, but the performance was lackluster. The pressure was on her to own the stage and she didn’t quite come through.
The crazy fun moments of the night belonged to the Ukraine, with Zlata Ognevich being carried onto the stage by a giant, Montenegro, with Who See and Nina dressed as astronauts, and Belarus, with Alyona Lanskaya making her entrance through a giant silver disco ball.
During the vote tabulation, a dance group took to the stage and started flaying about in piles of fake snow. I think they were supposed to be making or forming a snowflake, but I’m not sure. Afterward, the hostess called it a tribute to the northern lights. Okay. Anyway, I think it was one of those dance numbers that probably looked better in person.
The breakout, standout performance of the night belonged to Aliona Moon of Moldova. She sounded amazing and she worked that dress. In my opinion, this was the best performance of the night.
The Hot Mess award goes to Moje 3. I felt bad for these girls because I do think they’re talented. Their costumes were dreadful and their stage antics were painfully amateur. I thought their Beosong national selection performance was bad, but this was worse!
In the end, it’s all about who makes it to the final. These are the 10 finalists as they were announced. The point spread won’t be known until later.

Six of my 10 choices made it through, so I’m very pleased, though I’m sad Slovenia didn’t make it. I really liked Hannah and “Straight Into Love.”
Congratulations to the finalists! I’m looking forward to the second semi final on Thursday. See you then!
